Description
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. This bacterium is commonly transmitted through bites by black-legged ticks, which are frequently found on vegetation and animals such as deer, dogs, mice, horses, and birds in areas where the disease is prevalent.
When an individual is bitten by a tick carrying B. burgdorferi, the bacterium can enter the body through the skin, resulting in symptoms such as a characteristic rash, fever, headache, and fatigue. If left untreated, the disease can spread throughout the body and impact the nervous system, heart, and joints. Typically, Lyme disease can be effectively treated with a few weeks of antibiotics.
