Men who possess the RS3 334 allele are less likely to develop a strong emotional connection with their partners and may experience marital crises or divorce more frequently. They are also less likely to get married and more likely to cohabit compared to individuals without the RS3 334 allele. The AVPR1A gene is positioned on chromosome 12, and individuals inherit two copies of this gene – one from each parent. An uncomplicated DNA test can be performed to identify which versions of AVPR1A an individual has inherited.
The regulatory region controlling AVPR1A protein levels contains short tandem repeats (STRs), which result in three distinct AVPR1A variants (RS1, RS3, and GT25).
One variation of RS3, referred to as RS3 334 allele, has been linked to reduced pair-bonding tendencies in males. The AVPR1A STR test gauges the length of the RS3 repeat region, enabling determination of whether an individual carries the RS3 334 infidelity variant.
